Ergonomics is the term given to the study of work and the most efficient ways of working. For chairs to be truly ergonomic, they must therefore offer the adjustability, support and comfort needed to provide users with working conditions that are conducive to their activities.
Adjustable…
The first requirement of ergonomic chairs is that they must be able to be quickly and easily adjusted to suit each individual user.
Gas lift height adjustment enables a chair to be set at a height that allows the user to place their feet flat on the floor or a foot rest when they are in a seated position. Ratchet back height adjustment is also essential and helps maximise the support provided to the lower back. Seat slide meanwhile offers the flexibility of altering the seat depth so that the back is again properly supported. Seat arms should also be height adjustable.
Support…
Humans are not born with flat bottoms and perfectly straight backs. To fully support the body, ergonomic chairs should therefore incorporate contoured seat pans and back panels. In addition, they should allow the user to move whilst they are seated. Tension control, which lets the chair gently recline under variable force, has to be considered. Inflatable air cushions inserted into the chair back can provide additional lumbar support.
Comfort…
Finally, ergonomic chairs should of course be exceptionally comfortable. The best seating is manufactured using high quality foams that wrap around the body and actively encourage the user to adopt a correct seating posture.
